Active
An initiated, dues-paying member who is enrolled in the university
Alumna
A sorority member who has graduated from their collegiate chapter
Bid
A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority
Big
A mentor assigned to a new member
Chapter
A chartered undergraduate or alumnae unit of a fraternity or sorority
COB
(Continuous Open Bidding)
An opportunity for chapters that do not reach quota during recruitment to bid to total and/or quota. The COB process is less formal. Not all chapters will participate in COB
Sorority
A group of individuals bound together by ritual, common ideals, and a strong bond of friendship and or sisterhood
Initiation
Ceremony in which a new
member becomes an active member
Legacy
Having an older family member (brother, sister, mother, father, grandmother, or grandfather) who was a member of a Greek organization
Philanthropy
Charitable events performed by Greek organizations
PNM
(Potential New Member)
Any woman going through a formal recruitment process in interest of joining a sorority
Quota
Number of new members to which each chapter can offer bids during recruitment. Determined by the number of chapters and the number of women participating in bid matching
Panhellenic
Central governing body found on all campuses that have nationally recognized women's social fraternities/sororities
Recruitment Guide
A greek woman who does not participate in her chapter's recruitment so she can guide PNMs through recruitment
Recruitment
The week potential new members meet sororities. Recruitment also takes place through COB.
Pledge Class
Group of members of an organization who were initiated at the same time in the same organization
